Statement

Art guides the path that leads from the immediacy of our sense to what Clive Bell called “the ultimate reality”. It is our way, the way of man; as an artist I endeavor to facilitate and enhance this aesthetic road.

My work is inspired by a vital conception of human existence. It rallies tools and resources — historical, professional, and individual — to translate experience into significant visual form. Tolstoy defines art as “a human activity consisting in this, that one person consciously, by means of certain external signs, hands on to others feelings he has lived through, and that others are infected by these feelings and also experience them.” I strive, in my pieces, to reach beyond the decorative and ornamental, legitimate signs of good craftsmanship, and attain to content that is deeply, humanely meaningful.

Over the decades of my career my understanding and artistic technique has evolved toward the abstract elements of perception, specifically to embrace the geometry of our visual experience and its roots in light and color. During the past several years I have worked these ‘formulations’ into three dimensional, free standing, painted wall sculptures.

The result is something along the lines of Gestalt art-structures that present possible orders of visual stimulus yielding, literally, formed space for individual interpretation. Perceptual abstraction is an intellectual distillate but deriving from experience with kaleidoscopic variations. In the fusion of basic sensory data and explicit geometries, I aim to produce objects and images — works of art — that are highly individualistic yet universal.
