Gene is a patient and meticulous craftsman. His work shows earnestness and sensitivity. His new set of preoccupations takes him well into the central problems of contemporary artistic research and puts him strongly in the mainstream of the present without being clever or anxious. |

Markowski’s compositions are in the mode of systemic art, with some basic or geometric shapes arranged in a systemic order. Most paintings of this mode, including those of leading New York artists, are sharply or harshly patterned, calculated and cool. For some reason, perhaps because of his bright and lilting color combinations, this is not true of paintings by Markowski. Instead they have a feeling of freshness and friendliness. |

Manual skill and control are important in Markowski’s work, as patterns of one shape and color play against another in neat quilts of paintings. Besides illustrating the artist’s marked urge or order, Markowski’s new work shows his disciplined approached to placement, pattern and the active engagement of every element in the composition. |

Markowski’s combination of intense colors, sculptural spaces, austerity of form and great organizational logic creates, paradoxically, a quasi-religious sense of hypnosis or exaltation. |

Through geometric shape and flowing lyrical line, surrounded with astonishing color combinations, Markowski’s abstract paintings and sculpture move beyond the decorative into the depths reason, mathematics, and a spirituality that is not only surprising, but deeply satisfying. At times the work is playful and joyful without loss of intention, and at other times one senses a probing into the mystical through his use of color. In the chaotic world we live in, Markowski’s work brings logical order and tranquility. |

Markowski’s work leads one to the pictorial possibilities of abstract symbols that suggest the known and unknown world. He has produced works that has attracted national and international praise. In Markowski’s compositions, the gorgeously patterned rectangles are imbued with feelings and movement. Purposely removed from reality, the motifs in his acrylic painted constructions become a reinvention of reality. Moreover, we perceive movement in their absolute stillness and playful projections. |

When I stand in front of one of Gene Markowski’s paintings or sculptures the impact that they have upon me is powerful, it is as though I am in a time warp, both in the future and present. His work shatters concepts of space and time, but in a mysterious way leads me back to myself, to contemplate the cycle of life itself. The depth of spirituality he achieves is remarkable, unforgettable, and places me in the position of seeing my life in a new revealing light. |

Art with a history … Gene Markowski does love to provoke. His show, 'Revelations', at the District Fine Arts, is a knife-edge dovetailing of Roman Catholic imagery, art history in-jokes, and commentary on race and culture. His photograph titled 'Salome Gets Her Man' is a good indicator of what the art fans are in for. |
